Electric Indoor Masters 2009

Wow. This weekend was genuinely the best experience I’ve ever had in all my years of RC flying. Its going to take something really special to top it all. That said I’m also completely exhausted as are most of the pilots and staff who made this truly remarkable event a resounding success. I’ll add photographs and videos to my report over the next few weeks and welcome a pilots eye report from anyone who took part in the competition to share their experiences with us.
I really must thank our Pilots first as without them we would not have a competition. Pilots of note who really stood out for me over the competition weekend were firstly all of our international field. Of which two real stars of the show emerged as expected in the form of Donatas and Derk. Carl Ollson supporting us for the second consecutive year kept the lads honest as did Nicolas Pietu. All the top honnors in F3P-A and Am going overseas.
The whole spirit of the competition was well received by the pilots and the audience alike. Its so difficult to name everyone who made the competition the spectacle it was and I had my head down most of the day looking at timetables, scoring so I can’t recall every flight and its a real pity that no doubt I will miss some note-able performances in my mini competition report.
For me the only negative from the weekend was the mindless thugs who took it upon themselves to destroy the passenger window in the Van Der Vechts car, stealing both a mobile telephone and a sat nav. My faith in humanity was restored somewhat by the staff at the centre. They went well beyond the call of duty to not only help clear the broken glass from the vehicle but to also fit a temporary pesprex (plexiglass) window to ensure them a safe journey home, although I hear the boat trip was somewhat memorable due to rough seas.

Aeromusical

I think we have all marveled in the performances we have seen on youtube of people like Donatas and Derk performing their AM routines but to see them first hand is another matter indeed.
Derk took top honors with a stunning and simply beautiful routine , just edging Donatas in 2nd place and Carl Olsson taking 3rd place with the same model that he used last year. How Carl has kept his model in truly perfect condition is beyond me. All three top placed routines were notably different in there choice of music and style. Derk’s routine was generally bigger using more space in the hall which may have just grabbed him the points that took him to the top step of the podium. Derk used different music and a different routine in Round 3 (his WAG routine) that didn’t pay off as it didn’t quiet fit into the space we had available, but the damage had already been done to the opposition by then as Derk had already taken the first two rounds.

Freestyle “The revenge of Donatas”

So we’ve never had an Indoor freestyle competition before and how do you mark a freestyle event? I decided freestyle was all about pleasing the crowd so how better could we do other than let the crowd themselves decide. 10 Flash cards scored 1 to 10 were distributed at random to the seated audience on both Saturday when we flown one round of Freestyle an two further rounds on Sunday. I have to be honest one mans insistence to score 10’s from most of the audience made entering the scores a simple task. If you saw the performances yourself you wouldn’t be surprised to see Donatas top the score sheets in all three rounds. Round three was close, very close as Derk pushed Don all the way but was still beaten by just a single point. What did amaze me in freestyle however was my close friend Connor Stephenson. Connor has only been flying for just over three years and continues to go from strength to strength. Connor Matched Derk in Round 1 point for point , struggled a little in round 2 but pulled it all back in Round 3 with an amazing maneuver through the beams in the very highest visible point in the ceiling some 22m high. Connor will be more than happy with his third place considering who he was beaten by. Shahid (aka Bango) what can I say? Round 3 your a complete lunatic but then again so is Donatas and his  friend Unsure if he could fly the model through a 900 mm diameter hoop so the hoop connected to two meatl poles was dragged over the hovering model then over Bango himself. Lets be honest the routine wasn’t technically amazing but was so funny you couldn’t help but to agree with the crowds decision to match him point for point with Derk. Don used very trick available though and thoroughly deserved his win and the accompanying Glassware. BTW look out for Andy Rigby’s stair run very soon!

Synchro

We never had enough time to prepare for synchro so only two teams entered, that was Derk and Bert Van Der Vecht and Loic Haux and Nicolas Pietu. So the lads were asked to perform their routines once just for fun. It was then and only then that Simon McNeil and Chris Currie said they would make up a routine so we could have a competition, they had a secret weapon too! Not be be left out the Irish lads stepped up to the Mark too and with the help of Robert Graham and Harry Reid we had a four way fly off for the viewing public to s   core again. We only found out later in the day why Loic and Nicolas said they could only fly their synchro flight  after the AM competition had ended. First up were Derk and Bert with a polished routine that showed their dedication and practice. Robert Graham and Harry Reid both flew there Deluxe V3’s is smooth flowing and surprisingly well synchronised F3P style maneuvers to second place. Chris Currie and Simon McNeil were guided through there routine by a very strange little man in a green suit and a matching hat. The fact that the trousers were missing a belt just added to the comedy I don’t think I watched the routine just laughed at the spectacle. Loic and Nicolas didn’t take the synchro seriously either a minute into the routine saw Loic is a steady hover well away from the safety line and Nicolas flying around him wildly at speed. The inevitable and deliberate collision got rapturous applause but not a score to match. Well done to everyone who took part.

What can I say a complete laugh and a great end to the days proceedings. My own model was showing the signs of wear as twice on Sunday morning when we were trying to decide on where to put the carbon poles for the pylon turns I took the left wing of completely. I don’t even know who was actually in the final. I know Donatas was supposed to be there but due to what Donatas describes as technical modification sot his model like changing the battery he never made it to the start line of 6 models. Someone else noticed his absence and jumped in very opportunistically to make six models in the final . The truth is Don had a choice of 3 illegal props in his hand to try and gain an advantage. His face was a picture as the race started.

F3P-C

The F3P-C Pilot list was dominated by local fliers with just Shaun Davies (England) and Gordon McRea (Northern Ireland) preventing the competition being fought out by local lads. Top honors in a fairly tight competition went to Neal Shead , Gordon McRea split the otherwise all English field to take second place and young Adam Lomax took third place with a model he had only 1hrs experience with. Shaun Davies won round 1 but had to settle for fourth place as the other pilots upped their game in the latter rounds. Another young lad David Childs came fifth flying the only Biplane at this years competition (Fancy Foam Milled Vrolet). Daniel Munnings struggled with his model but told me he had a great experience and would be better prepared next year.

F3P-B

Three English men, 3 from Northern Ireland, 2 Dutch and a quiet young man from Poland battled it out in this years demanding B schedule. It must have been demoralising  at times for most of the pilots. Top spot going to our very own Connor Stephenson with a near perfect display in each and every round. The competition was really for second and third place as a result of this demonstration of how to fly the “B” Schedule. That said some good scores were put in from all the other pilots 2nd, 3rd and 4th places were very close. I think we could have easily seen my Dutch friend Winfried De Vries taking home some glassware if he hadn’t been so tired from his long journey. A very creditable 2nd place went to Robert Graham from Northern Ireland and another star of the show for reasons most people including myself didn’t first realise grabbed 3rd place under the name of Andy Rigby. Andy worked harder than any other pilot over the weekend. Flying F3P-B, Freestyle, Aeromusical and sitting on the judges bench at every opportunity he got.

F3P-A

Perhaps the most closely contested competition all weekend. just over 6% would separate the top four after five tight rounds of competition. Swedens Carl Ollson took round 1 ahead of Donatas in second place and Derk Van Der Vecht in 3rd. It wasn’t to stay like this for long though. Donatas is famed for his Aeromusical routines and VPP flying but precision is hwere most of the top fliers earn their skills in the early years and Donatas is no exception, every round in the preliminaries and the final belonged to Donatas, with the chasing pack fighting hard. Derk was just squeezed out of even more glassware by the charismatic Nicolas Pietu (the man with the widest stance I’ve ever seen) in part and by his own admission due to small errors where it mattered.

Katie Anne Whitehead Memorial Trophy

For me the most Important trophy of the competition!
The Katie Anne  Whitehead Memorial trophy is in memory of the baby daughter of my wife Vanya and Myself. Katie Anne Whitehead was born sleeping on 25th May 2007 as a result of a rare genetic disorder called Edwards syndrome. It was an incredibly difficult time in our lives and it was then I first decided to initiate an F3P competition in the UK to stop my mind wondering and maintain some level of sanity. The Pilots Judges and helpers get to decide who deserves the trophy most from all the people involved with the competition.
I was very touched to see my name had appeared on a number of occasions but the eventual winner was a very popular choice and very deserving of the trophy in both Vanya’s and my eyes and equally so those of everyone involved. Derk Van Der Vecht once again taking home another trophy to his expanding collection.

Following discussions with the accuracy of the Aresti Diagram for the F3P-B Schedule we have made the required changes to the Aresti Diagram, and written description. This now includes the 180 degree turn being written in as an additional element with a K factor of 2.

EIM Racer

The EIM Racer has now been thoroughly flight tested both Indoors and out. I’m pleased to tell you it exceeds all our expectations as both a racer and as an aerobatic machine. The racer is very smooth flying at high speeds and can be simply banked and yanked around the course. Low speed needs a little more delicate touch and Rudder certainly helps the turns but again is not essential. The plan will be avialble for download very soom and we hope to be able to supply a foam parts kits for £10-00 + p&p.

Ammended Rules for Rubbing is Racing

Its has come to our attention that some pilots have motors other than thoose listed in the original rules that meet the same basic specification. To allow contestants to use these motors is not seen as detromental to the basic format of the competition. As a result we have ammended rule GR2.1 to stae that motors in the 2200-2300kv range weighing 14-16g are now race legal. This allows other motors such as the Eflite Park 250 to become race legal.
